So there was some recent confusion in class between communism and and Nazism, which is totally understandable, as both of these have become strong trigger words for stirring up American fear and anger over the last 50 years or so.
Check out this post at HowStuffWorks.com that should shed a little light on the difference between socialism, communism, fascism, and Nazism.
Now think about George Orwell’s political allegory Animal Farm. What form of government do we see on Animal Farm? How and when does it change? How many different forms does the government of the farm take?
Finally, what can we learn from this? What is Orwell trying to suggest causes the transition from one form of government to the next, and the next, and so on?
In Animal Farm the reader can claerly see that the main cause of transition of govermaent is corrupttion. Napolian the hog has been using his power to get his own way just like the farmer used to and eventualy the animals are going to get fed up. It is the same in reality look at any revolution in history and you will see the same patern of rebelion and oppresion.
Orwell depicts similar forms of government, Communism, Authoritarianism and Fascism. Napolean, the dictator seeks absolute control over the animals and manipulates them to their death. Napolean keeps the animals in the dark and uses their lack of knowledge to his own advantage. Oppression and Rebellion is an on going cycle portrayed in Animal farm. This relationship, oppression and rebellion result in change in government. In this we the reader realize the faults of everyday society.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm depicts a few forms of government throughout the story. When the animals first gain control of the farm they implement a socialist government, where equality among all is stressed and communal effort in their society is enforced. When Napoleon declares himself the leader of Animal Farm the government shifts from socialist to more Communist because he becomes totalitarian in his control, with the single class party becoming the pigs. His government can also be seen as fascist because he forcibly suppresses opposition, namely, Snowball. I think Orwell is trying to suggest the perpetual evolving of oppressive governments. While we see differences among all these types of government, they all include some kind of oppression.
In Animal Farm corruction is exprred as a cycle that keeps repeating. Mr jones is kicked out but replace by a new “master”, napoleon. even today this cycle is shown by many countries and society, and asking the question will this cycle stop?
Okay, but this doesn’t really address the question.
i think it was always from the start a communism because there was always or two characters that tried running the show
Under Mr.Jone authority, the beginning of Animal farm is run with a communist government. When the animal gain control of the farm it can be seen under a socialist government, but as Napoleon slowly take control, it changes back to a communist government. I think Orwell is suggesting that in all government, there is corruption.
In “animal farm” we can clearly state that their is socialist government when the animals take over the farm. communist government occurs when Napoleon takes control over the other animals..orwell’s point is that there is always rebellion and oppression in a revolution.
The different forms of government in the farm were influenced be it’s leaders and no one else, at first Mr. Jones was the unquestioned leader , communism this system of government was constructed to benefit all from the work of all however Jones did not follow this model because of course they are animal and to him not equal after Jones is overthrown snowball does no better he hide’s his socialism under the cloak of a communist government and passing it off as freedom this does not change with Napoleon, the point being shown in animal form is that corruption is human nature and not matter how much we try we can not run from that fact .
In Animal Farm, i think there is a two different governments. There is socialism, when the animals take over the farm, and then there is Communism, when Napolean take command of the farm with his dogs and pigs. What i believer we learn is that if a government is not working, than it should be changed, as it is stated in the Constitution and that it is really just a life cycle in which if something is wrong it should be changed.
I think Animal Farm in my opinion ran in the category of Fascism through Napoleon’s actions and intentions in the book. We see how at one point in the story Napoleon uses his hounds as a sort of fear tactic to control and take order of the farm to his liking. Where he gets animals to confess their treachery against him and brutally slaughters those of have confessed, and essentially putting the other animals into a position of where there voices are being spoken for them, where they are being told what to think and how to think. Its as if Napoleon strips them of what they once thought they posed…freedom, and cunningly drives them to total control to where there voices are no longer herd.
When the animals rebel against Jones their goal is not to become a communist government or for some animals to take over but to become free of oppression and cruelty suffered in Jones’ times. Their ideal lives would be those of a free farm. The point where things start changing is when the pigs dedicate themselves to reading and writing. From that point on the “lower animals” are more vulnerable to be manipulated because of their absence of knowledge. The pigs on the other hand have aquired extended knowledge that enables them to take over the rest of the animals. There we see the transition to a communist type of government where now the pigs have become the sole leaders of the farm. Later Napoleon becomes a totalitarian and implements his own measures even betraying the revolution.
Orwell depicts many forms of authoritarian government. The animals want to rebel against the authoritarian figure Jones because he has become a corrupt oppressor as the animals see it. they soon rebel and begin to live in peace (I guess :/). The animals swear not to become human in any way although this changes as soon as the pigs become literate. Soon the whole concept of animalism becomes a symbol of communism in which the pigs become the authoritarian ruler and the rest of the animals are forced to follow as they become the oppressed. thus, showing the never ending cycle between rebellion and oppression.
There’s a communist government in the beginning of “Animal Farm” under Mr. Jones’ authority. When the animals rebel and take control, it’s a socialist government at the beginning. Then, Napoleon takes control and it slowly turns into a communist government. So for awhile it was a socialist government but for the most part is was communist.
How was it a communist government under Jones, Jonathan? I’m not sure you’re clear on the differences between communism and fascism.
In the beginning of “animal farm” there was a communist government because Mr. Jones was the oppressor. As the book progresses the animas get tired of the way they are being treated and they rebel. The rebellion was successful and it quickly turns into a socialist government. Then, Napoleon takes over and he slowly becomes a new oppressor continuing the cycle. Therefore the socialist government becomes a communist government again.
Mr. Jones was in control at first and was making the animals work for economic means. @Lindsey
Oh and by the way i posted a comment on the Obama speech blog, but it’s not showing up???
In the beginning Mr. Jonas to the animals was like a type of oppresser or totalitarian. He was in control of the animals and made them do his work but after the rebellion the smartest animals the pigs became socialist. The pigs realized they were the smartest and could take advange of all the animals. when Napolean declares himself ruler they become communist, all the animals basically are told when to work and how much they can eat. For a time they are communist but then napolean becomes to powerful and becomes totalitarian. He has all the power for him self and exciles snow ball.I think george is trying to say that all these forms of governent all have some kind of oppression, some just have a more aggressive approach to themselves.
George Orwell uses many types of government throughout his novel. He uses a socialism government, where Jones is kicked out and are all seen as equal. Their way of government begins to change to a Communist party, that is to where Napolean views himself as the only leader of Animal Farm. Napolean is the only leader yet he uses a totalitarian system to make himself more powerful and rule out all of his enemies. Like in World War II Adolf Hitler as well as Napolean uses Nazism to get what they want. In other words what Napolean said is what was done. That was when all the animals excepts pigs and dogs got to live in the house and were treated a lot better than the rest of the animals.
I think that what Orwell tried to suggest was the fact that language could be manipulated in many forms to get what you want.
Orwell use the animals as symbol of govertment . Napolean the pig is the tyrant because he made him self the leder . He is manipulate to get what he want he feels supeior since he has more knowledge. The same way in the goverment they are superior because of their money and power which causes oppression and rebellion.

The whole point of the rebellion in my opinion was to achieve a socialism government for all the animals in the farm. But after the rebellion became successful and Napoleon took over it flips upside down and becomes a fascism government. Napoleon became a dictator that took the other animal’s innocent loyalty and used it to his advantage and control, forcibly suppressing them into unnecessary labor. I think the farm takes two major forms of government: Socialism and Fascism. The main thing I would say we can learn from this once a leader is handed too much power it’s almost certain for them to abuse it and keep wanting more of it. It’s always going to be a cycle of taking over and trying to maintain that abused power.
Orwell has clearly described The Russian Revolution in Animal Farm. For those who read the book we all know what happened; animals rebel but why don’t they rebel back? In my opinion, I think that after a rebellion they wont rebel on who controlled the situation because either the one who was leader had a taste of his glory and will demolish anyone who comes near by putting in fear to the people/animals and control with oppression power. The word communism was described to be an equal for all society right? Well like I said before, when the leader who is controlling all the “equal work” of the community, they think themselves as a big shot. Therefore it becomes a society controlled by government, which in Animal Farm was first a communist land but than it will become back to a socialist government lead by a tyrant leader.
oh and by the way Oswell did a great job in Animal Farm!
In the beginning of Animal Farm the type of government that wanted to be achieved was clearly communism, but due to corruption, greed, and influences by the very same type of government they rebelled against and overthrew the strive for a communist form of governmant turnned into what i believe to be a dictatorship or fasciest type of government.
