MONSTERS!

My favorite kind of monster is a zombie. I love zombie movies, stories, comics, video games, and just about anything else that features the Zombiewalking dead. Over the years, I’ve put a lot of thought in to why these flesh-eaters interest me so much. I am, after all, a vegetarian.

Monsters, I think, represent some aspect of ourselves that we’re not happy with, or that we’re afraid of. They represent our shadow selves. Monsters of all kinds are symbols of what we hate most and are most afraid of in humanity.

Zombies, then, represent all of those things that we do mindlessly, as an idiot horde. Zombie movies set in a mall are really about how we human beings shop without thinking. Zombie movies with strong military themes often represent how we human beings engage in war mindlessly.

So  I get it, now. I’m a teacher, so I take it as a personal mission to stop people from acting mindlessly. It is my job to make you think, to keep you from becoming a zombie. I’m  a zombie hunter, in other words, which is exactly what I wanted to be when I grew up.

So what’s your favorite type of monster, and what troubling aspect of humanity do you think that monster represents? What does it say about you that you’re so attracted to that particular type of monster?

As cliche as it sounds, my favorite “monster” is the vampire. It brings out the most primal needs of a human. The fear of death is always lurking beneath the surface of the human mind. Vampires represent immortality and feeding off of the human weaknesses. Vampires seem to have no feelings and are not able to get hurt. It is human nature to want to be strong and not able to be hurt. There is also a seductive nature of vampires. They seem to use their sexuality to entice you to come to them. It once again comes back to human nature, the need for sex and love and eventually deceit. Vampires bring out the primal needs and fears of mortal beings.

Mine would be warewolves. And I think they represent the animal instint of humans. And I agree with the fact that vampires represents Sexuality Transmitted Diseases.

my favorite monster would be the warewolve because in the movies that i have seen after the character becomes a beast he is more aggresive and more outgoing as in teen warewolf with michael j fox as the main character he is able to ask the girl that he likes out , before he was to scared of rejection but now he has a new found confidence , the wolve represent what we wish we could be .

My favorite Monster is the Chupacabra, because it loves to suck up on animals blood! Imagen waking up in the middle of the night and the Chupacabra is in your backyard, pretty scary huh? It is a night living myth that lives thru our world by stories and documentaries. We will never know wheather it exists or not, unless you see it in person. But then thats pretty crazy to think of,if that was to happen to me i would crap my pants and run of like a chicken. What about you?

  5. Erwing Villanueva says:

First of all let me say something to the people above me. Vampires is like old fashioned. They do represent immortality and feeding off of the human weaknesses. They are very passionate and are always like sex symbols. Female vampires are hot by the way. Werewolves depends who the character is. They are some good and some evil. But they always have big muscles, hairy and they get naked. (Girls like that) LOL. And Chupacabra (goat sucker) is not even a monster in my opinion. Even though it is classified as a vampire. Some people think it is an extraterrestrial from the outer space. But I think it is another animal like any other such as a coyote or dog.
Now my favorite monsters are three. First is La Llorona “the weeping woman” it is a very popular monster all over in Mexico. It represents a mother killing her three sons and be sorry. Second is the bogeyman a ghost-like monster. Represents our believes and dreams. The more we believe the more we get scared. And bad things happen to us. We should be positive and optimistic instead of the negative. The third one is Freddy Krueger. Is almost the same as the bogeymen but Freddy Krueger is more violent and sexually. This are monsters that I like and represent something in humans. They attracted me because they have a unique story. So hope you people like it and hope that the people above me do not misunderstand me what I was trying to said. LOL

My favorite monster would be a werewolf. I like werewolfs because they are both human and monster, and the characteristics that they both bring together do not differ from a human being. The character that a werewolf brings together a human and monster really attracts my interest.

My Junior year, I was really into the moon. I studied the lunar phases and the different effects they had on people. Usually, during a full moon, people tend to get a little crazy and wild. Just like a werewolf.
Some research that I found said that crime rate seems to go up on nights with a full moon. There are so many cool things about the moon; I find the moon to be so… awesome!
The werewolf has to be my favorite monster, mostly because it’s so strongly associated with the moon, something that affects all of us.

  8. Kathryn Lindsey says:

When you’re in an environment where you feel vulnerable and helpless, out of your element, that’s when your fears take over. What is more hostile than being surrounded entirely by water that is full of unknown creatures with big sharp teeth? Everybody loves the modern monsters on Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, but sea monsters (the leviathan, the kraken, Scylla and Charybdis, the dangerous temptress Sirens and mermaids, the giant squid, the White Whale, and even good ole Nessie the Loch Ness Monster) have always been popular tales to tell from the safety of dry land.

  9. Ricky says:

I was wondering if anybody could figure out what aspect of humanity Aliens represent. I would do it myself but I have a serious and dangerous fear of Aliens. I think they call it Xenophobia.
It would be so cool if someone could find that out for me.

  10. Gerardo Zubiri says:

I don’t have a favorite monster but I do have thoughts on what a few of them represent. The “Boogeyman” to me represents the deep dark secrets that we keep to ourselves and even the people closest to us, in fear. Several stories claim that the “Boogeyman” hides in our closets and under our beds which happen to be the places where dust seems to accumulate the most. They also happen to be darkest and most mysterious areas of our rooms, specially when the lights are off. Our secrets are pushed to the back of our heads and the Boogeyman seems to represent the fear that they might one day be uncovered and come back to haunt us.
The werewolf is one of my favorites because it represents that side of us that we know we have but we sometimes have no control over. In many stories, the person that becomes a werewolf doesn’t even remember much of what happened the night before, and if they do, they regret it, it just becomes an instinct to eat people at that moment. Kind of how we are when we’re drunk and we do something we regret when we wake up the next morning. They also represent to me that side of us that we dislike. The insecurities we have and how at times they take over us and turn us into monsters. For example, someone whom gets extremely jealous at the fact that their girlfriend is talking to another boy might be a sign that they are insecure about themselves, and therefore are threatened that their girlfriend will think the other person is better. Therefore they get jealous and react in an angry and jealous way. Turning into a “monster”.
Sea monsters are other creatures that play on our insecurities. They seem to play on the idea of maturing and being put out on our own. The sea is large and can be intimidating because of how mysterious it is. Characteristics such as all the different species of creatures that live in it, how deep and dark it can be, as well as the overwhelming size of it, can make the sea a dangerous and scary place to be. To me, the sea represents the world, and the monsters represent the challenges and problems that face us when we’re adults and therefore expected to face these burdens on our own.

Not so sure if this fits in the ‘Monsters’ category but, there’s a film called, Pumpkinhead from the 80s that reminded me of this.
Basically, what he represents in us, is the want and desire we have when we want to get back at someone that hurt us. It’s that feeling of anger and demand to do something to get even and sometimes we can go to extremes to get revenge, to get the satisfaction of making things fair. Is what we wish we could do but can’t because we know the feeling of regret will be a burden afterward or because we don’t have the power to bring down someone.

  12. Melisa Martinez says:

I have to say Aliens are my favorite monster, and I’m not talking about the little green ones (for some reason I think those are harmless). I’m talking about the really ugly, spitting acid, and I want to destroy human life type. Aliens are really something else they are the monster you really don’t want to fight. I mean hanging from ceilings then just jumping down and spitting acid isn’t a way I would like to die. Another thing about aliens is that they are what we all fear the most. The fact that our universe has more galaxies then the grains of sand on all the beaches in the world, we really won’t know if aliens well be nice or bad.

  13. Gabriela Salazar says:

My favorite monster would have to be the bogey man. The vampire thing is reasonable but like Erwing said they are so played out. The bogey man is a great monster for me because its always in your head no matter what. The more you think about him the more he will be with you. He eats off our fears and not from our “BLOOD”. I think that is more scary then a vampire.

  14. Eric Bernal ^_^ says:

My favorite monster would have to be a vampire. Like mr. Linsey said they represent the act of sexual and we have never thought about it deeply like that and now that I do it makes a lot of sense. Vampires stick there teeth and suck the blood of a human and it infects the human. Its like the act of sex and with it getting a sexual transmitted desease. Dracula came out when sifilus was discovered. Now its twilight in a way its sexual with the actors having nice bodies ( no homo) and seems like they are promoting sex that’s why many girls love twilight. What can you expect from young girls they love it and I guess meaning they love sex which is not a bad thing

  15. Kevin Pacheco says:

Zombies. Not the fast or smart kind I like the classic, slow, brain-eating zombie. All other monsters just seem ridiculous to me.

My fascination with zombies began in 1996 when the first Resident Evil was released on the PS1. For those of you who don’t know Resident Evil is basically about escaping a zombie-infested mansion in the middle of nowhere. Even though my memory of back than isn’t as clear as I would want it to be I still remember sitting next to my older brother, on those countless nights, as he played it. Even though I would never actually play the game, because of how afraid I was, I never missed him play it. Ever since those days I have loved anything with zombies in it.

Zombies represent how stupidly humans act without thinking. Each zombie movie has its own message about human behavior (Mr. Lindsey described some of those). There is one symbol present in all things zombie related that I just now realized. Zombies are mindless shells of ourselves and during the movies when their numbers increase enough society collapses. This says to the viewer, when human stupidity has spread enough the world as we know it will end. For their great symbolism zombies are the best monster. And really what else is scarier than a zombified loved one trying to kill you? Answer: nothing.

I’m not sure what zombies being my favorite monster says about me… any ideas?

  16. Victoria Cadena says:

Though I’m a strong monster fan I have favorites. My first one is the werewolf. Behind our flesh masks is a beast that is not allowed in the sun. So what do we do? We show that beast at night. Night is the cover that we hid under, where we are ’scared’. The second is nonother than the boggeyman. He is a monster that hides in order to scare us. This monster is not bad but in fact good. The boogeyman in our minds scare us away from objects or tempting facts. My boggeyman keeps me from skipping classes or not doing what I’m suppose to do. Theses monsters are the best and misunderstood.

I will only make one point of vampires. They are greedy monsters who want immortality, love, and to be our white picket neighbors. Again this is my strong opinion.

  17. Tracy Chavez says:

I don’t know if an alien would be considered a monster, yet this is the creature that makes me feel the most uncomfortable. From my personal point of view I believe they represent the unwanted, feared outsiders who do not fit into society due to imperfection or the lack of being considered what some call “normal”. Nearly all human beings exclude the kind of people who make us feel embarrassed, ashamed, and self-conscious about humanity. Whether it is because we don’t want to be seen around them, talking to them, or just plainly having any type of contact with them we turn our backs on them. Humans nowadays have a tendency to judge and critic anything and anyone, I’m not going to say that I have never done it because that would be considered lying. The way that I can relate to this monster would be by confessing that I myself feel different, curious, and free. I don’t have to please anyone and if by any chance I’m feared or make someone feel uncomfortable that is their problem; I unlike many others don’t have to pretend to be something/someone I’m not, just to fit in!

  18. juan hernandez says:

well my favorite monster is the warewolve becouse i thing they represent the reletion with the humen or i dont. i star watch warewolve movie when i see the movie underwould thats a good movie is a lot of action between the warewolve and the ´vampire.

  19. graciela de la rosa says:

My favorite monster is the zombies because they are such idiots and they don’t know what they are doing. These zombies just do horrible things with out thinking, just like us the humans.

My other favorite monster is the vampires but the way im reading the comments, they just give me the creeps.

The warewolves represent to me is courage and fearless. They can protect and safe but at the same time, they can be evil.

  20. Celinda Reyes says:

Before I decided to add my comment to this post, I read all of the previous posts, and I came to one conclusion….a ghost is not a popular monster. I mean think about it, there are a lot of posts about aliens, werewolves, vampires, and of course zombies but no ghost posts. Now you may be thinking at this point, “Who cares if a ghost is a popular monster or not?” which is exactly my point, no one cares about ghosts. Think about it, ghosts are completely translucent, and they are spirits who remain on earth to complete any unfinished business they have. This being said, I believe that ghosts represent the “loners”, “losers”, or just anyone who is isolated for being different than others. Think about it, anyone who has ever been shunned or isolated feels invisible, and also regrets the fact that they do not get an opportunity to take advantage of all that life has to offer, just like a ghost.

YODA!!!!!!!!!! My favorite monster would be yoda form Star Wars!!! Oh yeaa…. Yoda is a powerful jedi in which he can do anything with his jedi powers. His an amazing monster because he is a noble, smart and good, he can do anything that you can think of. I think of my self a good noble intelligent person, not being cocky or anything but I think I am:D. Plus we can’t never forget the classics, yea there are vampires, warewolves and so forth, but there’s never like the monsters that are in STAR WARS!!! I love yoda for who he is, he and the other jedis try their best to keep everything in its justice and are truly good leaders and that’s what we should have more in this world! I hope one day that I can become a “yoda” and be a good leader with a good heart. And for those who are reading my comment, I’m not a geek, I really like Star Wars and maybe you should watch it some time and you’ll see what I mean :]

My favorite monster would have to be Freddy krueger. He is awesommmmmeeeee! I think Freddy krueger basically just represent the fear that goes around in our mind because Freddy krueger goes into peoples dream and messes with their mind. Our mind is full with fearful things and sometime we fear it to much that it affects our lives mentally and physically. This could be seen in the Freddy movies as the people have fear towards him leaving an open portal to their dream so he could physically and mentally mess with their held. This is just like how we are afraid of scary movies and let it affect the way we sleep because we are to scare of what we watched or heard.

  23. Jesus Estebane says:

My favorite monster would have to be micheal myers. Micheal is pure evil, just pure evil. Unstopable, just keeps comeing and nathing can stop him. Im just amazed with his character, hes every thing in humans that dont want.someone with unstopable power who never leaves them alone and just keeps comeing back. In a sense i feel like micheal is like a problem or something that humans want to forget but keeps comeing back to them in there dreams. I feel like im like micheal myers becasue i never quit when i wrestle someone, i just simply keep comeing and of course nathing can stop me..im unstopable and am just pure evil on the mat.

  24. Jose Rodriguez says:

I really liked Celinda’s comment about ghosts.
Poor Ghosts. They’re just not scary anymore. I guess because whenever someone says “ghost”, I think of the long white sheet with two eye holes kind of ghosts instead of actual spirits.
I never thought of ghost as being “losers” before but it does make… kind of. The loners who never got to make much of their life. It’s a cool way to look at ghosts.
I haven’t completely lost all interest in ghost, there just haven’t been any good ghost movies lately. The last good ghost movie that I saw was “The Others”.

As silly and childish as it may sound, the one “monster” (I don’t know if whether to call it that or no) I fear the most would probably be like ghost. It’s no that I think of them as monsters, but every time I go to Mexico theirs always someone telling me stories about ghosts or spirits lurking around. I find that watching “A Haunting” on the discovery channel completely freaks me out. I don’t think I’m afraid of ghosts,I think I’m afraid of super natural things. I find it super creepy and crazy.
I agree with Celinda, I think that spirits are souls that are still in earth because they have unfinished business, but I don’t think their “loners.”
